Sink Styles and Faucets

The type of  faucet you purchase will depend on the style  of sink you are replacing the faucets on, or the style of new sink you are looking at. Determine if the faucets will be mounted on the sink, the counter top or the wall. If you are going to have faucets on the sink itself, you need to check if the sink has one or three holes. If it has no holes then your choices are limited to wall mount of counter top fixtures The faucet must be compatible with the style to work properly.

Faucets are available in single-hole, 4 inch centerset, 4 inch minispreadwall mount or 8 inch widespread styles.  There are also recent additions to faucet styles that include vessel sink and metering types.

Handles

One-handle faucets provide on/off activation and temperature setting with a single operation. Most one-handle faucets have the lever attached to the spout. Some wall-mounted faucets have a separate handle that can be placed just to one side of the spout. One-handle faucets are usually made to fit either one or three (4-inch) installations.

Two-handle faucets feature separate handles to control the hot and cold water mix. While most two-handle faucets are either widespread or centerset, many wall-mounted faucets have two handles.

Finishes

Faucets are most often made of brass, then plated with a silver colored metal such as chrome or nickel or with a gold colored metal such as brass or even gold. Most faucets come in a variety of colors and finishes to match your bathroom decor. While chrome is the most durable, it's also the most affordable. Alternative coatings are much more expensive. Different manufacturers tend to supply different finishes and colors. Some of the finishes that lavatory sink faucets are available in are as follows:

  • Polished Chrome
  • Brushed Chrome
  • Colored epoxy (glacier white, almond, biscuit, and black)
  • Polished nickel
  • Satin nickel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Bronze
  • Gold
  • Porcelain
